Dogs Barking at Birds

Leonor Teles

School is over and there's a hustle in the air. In Porto, tourists fill up the streets and cafés. The old and decadent are now the highlights of the city’s gentrification. Vicente moves around town on his bike and watches the urban changes happening day to day. The town is no longer the same, the world is changing and so is he. Among his family and friends, Vicente lives with anticipation the first days of summer and the beginning of a new life.

A Pleasure, Comrades!

José Filipe Costa

1975, the year after the Carnation Revolution. Eduarda, João and Mick come from Northern Europe to work in the co-ops in the occupied farms of central Portugal. Like many others, they come to help with the land and the livestock, give medical appointments, family planning classes, show sexual education films and participate in the traditional dances. They bring a great deal of questions, but the “comrades from the South”, in turn, have more questions than answers:

- Comrades, do you want to know how we behave? Do you want to know who we are? How we treat our women and children? How we interact with each other and how we love? Come! We will find each other peculiar, and we will surely disagree on many things, but it’s all part of this revolutionary celebration!

Djon Africa

Filipa Reis and João Miller Guerra

Miguel Moreira, also known as Tibars, also known as Djon África, learns that genetics can be cruel when his physiognomy - as well as some of his strong personality traits - denounce him, straightaway, as his father’s son; someone he has never known.
This intriguing discovery leads him to try to find out who this man is. All he knows about him is what his grandmother, with whom he has always lived, has told him. A raving curiosity makes him decide to go look for him. Following the journey of John Tibars to meet his father we will also encounter the territory of the dream that haunts memories, desires or mythologies of a good part of those who maintain their cultural roots and the genesis of their identity in the African continent. Tibars lives two identities in conflict and at the same time in harmony. What’s living in a ghetto in Portugal and being an African without being it? This ambivalence finds a projection of a lifetime in this adventure. Africa appears here with a whole load of imagination, in the projection not only of the place, but also of its essence, of its belonging.

Life out there, has it been seen?

Filipe Carvalho

Pyrite has run out in the old mining complex of São Domingos. But in this semi-abandoned territory, which is a national heritage site, life persists. Is a vision of the future important for the present of this small village? Observing life unfold in Mina de São Domingos, the film offers an utopian path towards the future of this territory and its community.

Batrachian's Ballad

Leonor Teles

“Simultaneously strange and familiar, distant and near, disquieting and seductive, outsider and cosmopolitan, Gypsies are shrouded in an aura of ambiguity. They cannot be said to be invisible, as they hardly go unnoticed.”

Daniel Seabra Lopes in Deriva Cigana, 2008

Like the Gypsies, ceramic frogs don't go unnoticed to a careful observer. Batrachian's Ballad comes about in a context of ambiguity. A film that intervenes in the reality of Portuguese everyday life, as a form of fabling about a xenophobic behaviour.

Filipa Reis and João Miller Guerra

It's a possible portrait of Portugal in 2015.
A time when there is no longer work for some and no leisure time for others.

The Indispensible Practice of Vagueness

Filipa Reis and João Miller Guerra

“To beget something new through things which aren’t exactly new.”

Manuel Castro Caldas

Ar.Co embodies each person’s geography, it escapes normalisation. Each individual’s experience is his own. This film is my experience, our experience. Pieced together from the school’s archive, from recordings of classes by Manuel Castro Caldas and from conversations at home.

Trading Cities

Luísa Homem and Pedro Pinho

In 2008, the growing tourism industry of Cape Verde was frozen. The building of many hotels and resorts by foreigner companies had to be stopped due to a shortage of sand. The sand industry, primary resource for the production of concrete, had reached a dramatic level, endangering the beaches. This event caused a huge euphoria among the businessmen of Mauritania. A great number of trucks started to flow to the Nouakchott port, where many boats sail out to feed the tourist constructions in Cape Verde. Trading Cities starts in Lisbon on a cargo ship. We will undertake an Atlantic route that re‐enacts these daily travels, in order to highlight the physical and social transformations in the landscape that these exchanges produce.

The End of The World

Pedro Pinho

A day at the beach, just before the summer holidays. A recently arrived girl who causes some curiosity. A whisper. A disruption - power goes out, a general blackout - maybe it was an accident, maybe it's only a pretext for a night together.

Cat's Cradle

Filipa Reis and João Miller Guerra

“Things happen, they occur and we either take advantage or we don’t. There’s a children’s game that, in Portugal, goes by the name cat’s cradle: the children tie a rope in a circle, then someone’s hand does this, someone else comes along and complicates it somehow, some finger complicates it even more, yet another one comes and twists his intertwined fingers and pulls his hand, and a new figure is formed. This game is called cat’s cradle. I think that what we have, in life, is a perpetual children’s game with the cat’s cradle, that life presents us with a problem, we look to see what we can get out of it, then we stick our fingers in it, we go like this and something else comes out. At best, the ability we can hope to achieve is that of becoming children again, and be able to truly see how the cat‘s cradle turns out.”

Generation Orchestra

Filipa Reis and João Miller Guerra

Generation Orchestra is a portrait of the impact of an initiative by the same name on students from the Miguel Torga School, in Amadora. The initiative was inspired by the international project Orquesta Sinfónica Simón Bolívar, the apex of the National Network of Youth and Children's Orchestras of Venezuela.

Ana, Daniel, Diogo and Mónica take part in Generation Orchestra and devote themselves to a project that breaks with the formatted context of public schooling and becomes an indispensable part of their lives. From the onset, starting with Drama classes, we discover their dreams, their relationship with music and their sense of truly belonging to a group.

Li Ké Terra

Filipa Reis, João Miller Guerra and Nuno Baptista

Li Ké Terra (Our Home) tells the story of Miguel and Ruben, two Cape Verdean immigrant descendants who live in Portugal but have no legal documents. They are torn between the desire to be a full Portuguese citizen and the obstacles they find in their day to day. Proud of being who they are they keep on dreaming of their future expressing at the same time their wishes for a better life.

Above all, Miguel and Ruben lead us to one question: What kind of identity has a stateless person?

Maputo Dancing Dump

Marco Pasquini

Suares is a group leader and an amazing dancer.
He presents us to his friends and introduced us to the world of trash in Hulene neighborhood, in Maputo, Mozambique’s capital. While they are cooking in large garbage cans, they tell us how they organize the work and establish hierachies and the microeconomics of this place. A setting that is far from being sad, especially when in the midst of the garbage they improvise choreographies.
