Basil Da Cunha directed several self-produced short films before joining Thera Production in 2008, a Swiss production company that produced the short film A Côté (Locarno Film Festival and Vila do Conde Film Festival).

In 2009, Basil settled in the Reboleira neighborhood near Lisbon, where he directed the short films Nuvem and Os Vivos Também Choram between 2011 and 2012, both selected for the Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival.

In 2012, Basil completed his film studies at the Swiss school HEAD in Geneva, where he has been teaching since 2013. As his graduation film, he directed his first feature film, Até Ver a Luz, also selected for the Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival in 2013. In 2014, he shot the short film Nuvem Negra, which was screened at the 2014 Geneva Biennale of Contemporary Art and won an award at the Oberhausen Film Festival.

In 2017, he directed his second feature film, O Fim do Mundo, which was selected for the competition at the Locarno Film Festival in 2019. In 2022, Basil Da Cunha directed the first episode of the documentary series Futura! for Swiss television broadcaster SSR.

In 2023, he presented the short film 2720 at the Visions du Réel Festival, winning more than a dozen awards, including the Grand Prize at Oberhausen, Best Portuguese Film at Vila do Conde, and Best European Film at the Clermont-Ferrand Film Festival. In the same year, he presented the feature film Manga D’Terra in the international competition at the Locarno Film Festival. Basil Da Cunha is currently in post-production on his next feature film, O Jacaré.

At the same time, he is preparing a television series, Innimigo Público, and has just written the feature film Fúria, currently in financing.
