João Miller Guerra (1974) lives and works in Lisbon. He graduated in Product Design from the School of Architecture of the University of Lisbon and completed his academic training in Painting and Visual Arts at Ar.Co. Between 2014 and 2021 he was a partner at the film and television production company UMA PEDRA NO SAPATO/VENDE-SE FILMES.
Together with Filipa Reis, he directed more than ten documentaries screened and awarded at festivals such as IDFA, Cinéma du Réel, DokLeipzig, Doclisboa, Indielisboa, among many others. The duo’s first feature film appeared in 2018, DJON ÁFRICA, which premiered in the Tiger section of the Rotterdam International Film Festival and won the FIPRESCI Jury Prize at the Uruguay International Film Festival. In 2023, they premiered LÉGUA at Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight, winner of the Special Jury Prize at the Festival del Cinema Europeo.
In 2025, João Miller Guerra presents his solo directorial work, COMPLÔ, a documentary that premiered at FIDMarseille and was shown in Portugal in the national competition of Doclisboa.
