Born in Lisbon, Marco Martins is an unavoidable contemporary creator in the Portuguese artistic scene. His work crosses several practices and artistic areas, ranging from cinema to visual arts, passing through documentaries and theatre.
In 2005 Marco Martins directed his debut film “Alice”, winner at the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs at the Cannes Film Festival (Prix Regard Jeune). His short film “A Longer Year” and his film “São Jorge” were both present in the Official Competition of the Venice Film Festival, at which the actor Nuno Lopes, won the Golden Lion (Orizzonti Award) for best actor in a leading role, for his work in “São Jorge”. Marco Martins most recent feature film “Great Yarmouth – Provisional Figures” has been recently premiered at San Sebastian in Official Competition.
In the visual arts field, he has collaborated with various artists, such as Michelangelo Pistolletto, Daido Moryama, Araki, Filipa César, among others. Also as a theatre director and creator he has been leaving a mark, both with classic works and community projects, such as “Baralha”, a play based on Shakespeare texts and developed with a gypsy community; “Estaleiros” based on texts by Samuel Beckett bringing workers from the Viana do Castelo shipyards to the stage; “All the World is a Stage” or “Provisional Figures Great Yarmouth” premiered at the Norfolk & Norwich Festival.
Marco Martins has been a founder member of MinistérioDosFilmes. He has been making advertising films since 1999, and has won some of the most important awards, both national and international, for his work in this area.
